Over the last few months there have been a lot of changes here at Wandar West. One thing that remains the same is our desire to contribute to the surfing community and stay connected with one of our favorite organizations - Mauli Ola.
On May 18th we were able to volunteer and be a part of the surf experience day they hosted in Waikiki. It was a beautiful sunny day filled with surf stories, salt-water hugs and sandy feet on surfboards.
There are times when Mauli Ola is able to sponsor a trip for one very deserving family that has been greatly affected by cystic fibrosis. This family has not just one, but three children living with cystic fibrosis. There are two sets of twins in the family and this is one of the twin girls who faces the challenge of balancing a normal childhood with all the medications required for her to just be able to breathe on a daily basis.
This day was different though.. Being by the ocean and being in salt water helps reduce her congestion and gives her one day of breathing easier. The salt water acts as a natural therapy and although it hasn’t yet been fully approved by doctors, they are starting to see the benefits in children that are exposed to these natural saline treatments and how it could possibly decrease the need for traditional medical treatments.
I will always have this day in my memory. A day of laughter, a day of surfing and lei making and realizing how truly lucky we are just to take in a breathe of fresh air with ease. I send all of my good wishes to this family and hope they always have this organization as a support group to their family.
